The first thing that you notice about Zelda: Majora's Mask is that it looks very similar to the original title (well okay, the first thing you notice is that it's in Japanese - but the similarity thing is definitely next on the list!) This means that if you're expecting some fantastically improved graphics and sound then you're going to be in for a bit of a disappointment. So what we thought we'd do instead would be to bring you a massive feature on the game including our impressions, some of the secrets and our hopes for the UK version. We did toy with the idea of getting someone who could read Japanese to review it but since (as far as we're aware) the majority of you lot aren't fluent in the language it seemed a little pointless. If you're playing the game in a language you don't understand, then you lose all this. While the graphics are not going to change and the gameplay will remain pretty much the same for the UK translation, the elements that made the first Zelda game such a joy were the storyline, the minigames and the interaction with the myriad of characters. However, upon playing the game we soon realised that there was no way we could fairly rate this title in its current form. We could in theory have reviewed the game from this version, thereby being the first magazine in the UK with a review and thus guaranteeing huge sales and lots of smiling shopkeepers. Having gained possession of an import copy of the Japanese version of the hotly anticipated sequel to Legend Of Zelda: The Ocarina Of Time - namely Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask - we had a serious decision to make. While the graphics are not going to change and ourselves with something of a dilemma.
LEGEND OF ZELDA MAJORAS MASK N64 ROM 240P
I used a Toshiba model D-R550 DVD Recorder to upconvert the N64's native 240p signal to 480i so that the Hauppauge could capture the console's audio/video signal. It's fair to say that we found ourselves with something of a dilemma. Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the official N64 S-video cable. In this first part I started a new save file, obtained magic and learned the Bombers' secret code. It still runs at the same 320x240 resolution as Ocarina of Time but simply uses the Expansion Pak to create better graphics and place more objects on screen, similar to Donkey Kong 64. One interesting thing to note about the original Nintendo 64 version is that although it uses the Expansion Pak, it doesn't run at a high resolution. I think Nintendo overcomplicated the boss fights. Although I haven't played it, I watched some footage of the remake, and I have to say, I don't like the changes (aside from the better graphics). I'm not too fond of the Deku Scrub stuff though.Īlmost two years after I uploaded my initial playthrough, Nintendo released a remake of this game for the 3DS. Stone Tower Temple is incredibly tedious, and collecting all the stray fairies just plain sucks.īut in general, I enjoy the game's similarities to Ocarina of Time (such as the Gerudo Fortress, which was one of my favorite parts), and I like being able to play as a Goron and Zora. There aren't many dungeons and most of the game is focused on side quests. It's a strange title and the three-day cycle is repetitive. However, despite my fond memories, Majora's Mask is nowhere near my favorite Zelda game. I still remember running around Clock Town for the first time and trying to catch the Bomber kids.

It was extremely exciting coming home from school and being able to play a brand new Zelda game on its release date, especially so soon after Ocarina of Time had been released. Before that I had only received Zelda games as gifts some time after their initial release. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Collector's Edition (gold cartridge) copy of Majora's Mask.Īs a kid I owned all of the Zelda games that came out before Majora's Mask, but this was the first Zelda game that I bought with my own money - on its release date too. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii Virtual Console. Rumble - This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on the Nintendo 64.
